Classroom Communication Goals Grid

Our first step in supporting our student's communication development is the Classroom Communication Goals Grid-2. This tool gives school professionals a tool to assess their student’s Present Level of Performance in communication for the IEP. You will be evaluating your student's ability to meet their basic wants and needs, socialize and develop language skills. You will also consider their understanding and expression of their knowledge of academic concepts to be successful in school. Students also must communicate to describe, discuss, argue, support, propose, and collaborate with their teachers and peers. With the Classroom Communication Goals Grid-2, you will have everything you need to fully address Communication Skills in the IEP including the Present Level of Performance, selection of multifunctional Goals, and to show Measurable Progress over time.

Communication Skills include 6 Common Classroom Communication Goals, which you will see represented in all of our student support tools!

  • Communicative Behaviors for Expressing Wants& Needs
  • Communicative Behaviors for Social Exchanges
  • Communicative Behaviors for Social Information Exchanges
  • Communicative Behaviors for Language Development
  • Communicative Behaviors for Academic Engagement
  • Spelling & Writing for Communication

In this lesson, you will watch the video, then follow along the Guiding Questions to consider how this tool helps you assess your student. Teams meeting as a group can follow along with the Round Table and Coffee Table activities described in the video and Slides Notes.

Please note, the training video describes the previous version of the Classroom Communication Goals Grid. We are in the process of updating this video but here are the main updates in the new version, The Classroom Communication Goals Grid-2.

  • All goals have been reviewed and the descriptions have been simplified with examples.
  • A Description and Activities Manual has been provided to give even more explanation of each goal to ensure improved inter-rater reliability.
  • A 6th competency, Spelling & Writing for Communication has been added to emphasize the importance of literacy to guarantee communicative competence for ALL learners.
